Research

School of Pharmacy researchers are true pioneers, exploring the frontiers of pharmacy and biomedical research, making discoveries to improve health. Our work in nanomedicine, computational drug design, and clinical and translational research puts us on the vanguard of discovery. With some of the country’s top researchers, instrumentation and facilities that few can rival, and growing investment from federal sources, we have made significant strides in areas including cancer, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, drug addiction, and diabetes. Through our outcomes research, we ensure that the medications developed are effective, safe, and cost-effective. A dedication to improving life and health on a local, national, and global basis shapes all our endeavors.

The school has researchers working at every point in the pharmacy spectrum, from investigating the structure of proteins to studying the effects of drugs in a clinical setting.  For us, it’s not just “bench-to-bedside” research. We’re able to come full circle, bringing patient observations back to the lab so we can adjust and optimize drugs.  This strong scientific foundation is integrated into the pharmacotherapeutic aspects of our program to provide our students with role models to stimulate and enhance active learning. Few other schools of pharmacy can say the same.

As the second decade of the 21st century approaches, we are assuming a greater role in improving the health and welfare of the citizens of Maryland through continuing research and discovery. Extending efforts to translate those advancements into clinical practices and outreach programs that improve health will be the focus of the next few years.
